Free-range snack table

I’ve blogged about our little snack station before and it seems that you loved it! I thought I’d share what we’ve got on offer at the table this week.

The table suits us greatly because I hate being chained to the kitchen and the kids love to graze.  I keep the jars and fridge stocked with time-tested favorites as well as new bits and pieces. I do prep and baking every couple of days instead of all day and the kids just help themselves as their appetite dictates. It’s a winner all round at our place.

Last week the fridge looked like this

Tannah and Harper eat baby cucumbers like they are going out of fashion. And the yoghurt is awesome on the granola

I know people love to pay out activated nuts…but they are awesome and easier to digest.

We are going through apples like nobody’s business at the moment. Thank goodness they are cheap and in season!

When we initially went to a “help yourself” style of snacking there was a lot of excited pigging out by the kiddos. We went through LOTS of food in the early days. Especially stuff like crackers and dried fruit. But the novelty wore off and now they eat for their appetite and what sort of food they feel like and they are just as likely to eat a square of cheese or wait for dinner if something good is on offer.

It’s a system that really works at our place.

Brilliant! I wonder if my kids could handle free access like that? Or, more to the point, would they snack on healthy food?

Anyway, I’m off to activate my nuts.

I love this idea and think it would work really well for our kids, but unfortunately, with our house set up, it’s not something we’ve got the space for until we extend. Currently they have free reign of most of the fridge and fruitbowl anyway. Isaac seemed shocked when I offered to make lunch the other day and I realised that huh, we’d all really just been grazing anyway.

I love this idea but my children can’t be trusted with anything unsupervised, they would just trash the place. I am hoping this is something to grow out of…

I LOVE this Shae!!!!! My 4 year old is STARVING all day when he’s at home and I think he’d really embrace this idea. If only he’d eat carrot sticks, hummous and cucumbers – I love that your kids do! He’d eat the rest of the nuts, granola, yoghurt and fruit definitely. It might be a good way to help my 2 year old eat more food as he really doesn’t like much. Will test it out. Thanks!xoxoxoxoxoxo

I saw this on your blog in the original post and I set up something similar for us over summer. I don’t bother with fridge food anymore, but I love the kids have free access to basic healthy snack foods. Makes everyone’s life much easier. SO thank you for sharing your great idea.
