I heart my body. I really do.

by Shae on October 25, 2012

It’s been a year since I paraded around the internet in my undies and it’s that time of year again. I’m back baby!

Th road to really and truly hearting my body has been long and I’m not sure there will ever be a time when I feel the love 100% all of the time. But I’m close.

I need to tell you what it comes down to.

My body deserves as much respect and love as any other. Just because my body does not fit into our society’s ideal does not mean I should feel ashamed.

My body is not wrong. There is, however, a lot wrong  about the incredibly narrow window that passes for beauty and the  ways we set ourselves up to fail reaching that mostly unattainable benchmark.

I deserve to wear no sleeves, long sleeves, skinny jeans, tracksuit pants, leggings, workout gear, fancy dresses and daggy round-the-house clothes without it being any of anyone else’s business.

And even swimwear. That’s right motherfuckers, my body has as much right as anyone else’s to be at the beach in swimmers.

My secret to “your best summer body” is simply to wear less clothes that you wore in winter. That’s it.

I deserve to feel sexy. I deserve to stop entwining my weight with my worth. I deserve to love the body I have right now instead of waiting for the perfect weight to like it.

My body is mine. I own the rights.

Same goes for you.

Your body is yours. Own it. Love it. Respect it.

I’m joining in with the fabulous I heart my body campaign over at We Heart Life. It’s also on twitter #iheartmybody

Watch out trashy magazines, Shae is about to bring your entire industry crumbling down. “Just wear less clothes than you did in winter”! What will they write about now? 😉

Love your attitude, love you x

Kirrily October 25, 2012 at 12:36 pm

Melissa Mitchell October 26, 2012 at 11:46 am

Fucking love you, you sexy bitch!

Marita October 25, 2012 at 8:25 am

Shae, I love you. Thank you.

I have every right to wear swimmers.

Will remember that every time I go to the pool with my girls and get those horrible looks from other people.

Cherie @ we heart life October 25, 2012 at 8:28 am

This is as perfect as you are!

Every one of your pictures, every one of your words, every BIT of your attitude!

This is just … spot … ON!

Congratulations on being 100% awesome!

katesaysstuff October 25, 2012 at 8:29 am

love it Shae, you’re spot on. I’m trying hard, but have a way to go. They are some kick arse swimmers by the way.

jess @ myheartisyourhome October 25, 2012 at 8:59 am

Catherine Rodie Blagg (Cup of Tea and a Blog) October 25, 2012 at 10:01 am

I fucking love you Shae! When I put my post together last night I thought about stripping off for a photo but chickened out. Then When I saw this post this morning I knew I had to do it xx

Carly ~ We Heart Life Creator October 25, 2012 at 10:15 am

Shae, have I told you how much I love you? You had me giggling from your first line. I love that you are almost there and your attitude is something I hope that I have soon xx

Kerri Sackville October 25, 2012 at 10:29 am

THAT, my friend, is an awesome post. Your smile and your attitude have me grinning from ear to ear. They are both magnificent. As is the red bra.
Now if only my stupid back would stop KILLING me I might heart my body too….

Kylez @ A Study in Contradictions October 25, 2012 at 10:30 am

Fantastic post! I absolutely love it, it’s totally inspiring. Your swimsuit is gorgeous and you look awesome in it! Where did you get it? I’m on the hunt for a new one.

Nikki @ Styling You October 25, 2012 at 11:22 am

You absolutely rock Shae … and are a pin-up girl for my swimwear post yesterday. We just need to build a bridge over our issues and work it!

Love it!
Love you, love your words, love your swimmers.
You own it & you’re rockin’ it, baby.

Kirrily October 25, 2012 at 12:39 pm

You’re the best. Around. And nothing’s ever gonna keep you down… oh, sorry, channelling a bit of old Karate Kid there for a second.

But really, honestly, this is the kind of thing that needs to be in women’s magazines! It needs consistently and constantly shouted out loud to drown out the “incredibly narrow (largely unattainable) window” push that is rammed down society’s throats.

Love your work. xxx

Glowless October 25, 2012 at 1:11 pm

You rock my world x

Syrenex October 25, 2012 at 1:32 pm

‘ken oath: I deserve to love the body I have right now instead of waiting for the perfect weight to like it.

Paige October 25, 2012 at 2:08 pm

There is nothing more beautiful than a confident woman. Goodness. I wish my role-models were as kick-ass as you when I was a teenager. You would make the best “Auntie Shae” and you most certainly do rock that swimming costume. :)

Veggie mama October 25, 2012 at 2:35 pm

You are fucking awesome.

corrie October 25, 2012 at 2:39 pm

I always love what you have to say! so cool! I wish growing up I could have the internet and blogs and curvy ladies instead of reading dolly with waifs in it. I would have probably felt a lot better about myself and not tortured my body with diet after diet!

gorgeous pics and laughing at your summer wardrobe advice!

Rhi @ Hummingbird's Song October 25, 2012 at 2:58 pm

You rock xx

Maria Tedeschi (Mum's Word) October 25, 2012 at 3:02 pm

Jayne October 25, 2012 at 3:56 pm

You rock that leopard print cossie, Shae!

A very thin ex-friend of mine once ranted on Facebook how ‘they’re called Skinny Jeans, not Make You Skinny Jeans’. I call bullshit.

You had me at ‘motherfuckers’. I’ve spent more time than I care to admit not wearing short sleeves or shorts. You are a badass, and I love it!

Tam October 25, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Ha – and the teenage girls in their heels and short skirts think *they* own the street and the beach. How wrong they are!

Adore your red bra, by the way.

Carly Findlay October 25, 2012 at 9:12 pm

I love your smile Shae

Yes! Love this post. Awesome. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Salz October 25, 2012 at 11:51 pm

You are just hilarious. You have a right to wear whatever you want. everyone has a right to wear whatever they want. Just as long as you are confident in what you wear who cares about other people.

Emily October 25, 2012 at 11:58 pm

He’ll yeah Shae! You are awesome. This is empowering. I love it!

Robyn (@slightly_deep) October 26, 2012 at 12:15 am

This is my favourite heart my body post! I just love what you have said. There are so many beautiful, beautiful bodies out there… and I hate the fact that we believe the lie perpetrated by society that you have to be skinny in order to be beautiful. You are seriously awesome, and beautiful!

Twitchy October 26, 2012 at 12:18 am

Your beaming face makes me beam xxxx

eccentricess October 26, 2012 at 1:25 am

God I love this, respect yes!!!!!! You look so happy and seriously beautiful xo Michelle

Amy Bradstreet October 26, 2012 at 5:29 am

Echoing all those before me, I love you, Shae. I really, really do. Your summer advice is spot-on and you look hawt in your swimsuit and more, you look like you think you look hawt, which is the more important bit. xo

Rachel from Redcliffe Style October 26, 2012 at 8:04 am

Great post!! I am ready to strip off for summer now :) Rachel xx

Elisha October 26, 2012 at 8:24 am

Confidence outshines body size any day! And you look Fab!
Eden mentioned you in her latest post, so glad i came and checked you out! Found a new little blog to read!

Amy @ MahliMoo October 26, 2012 at 8:30 am

Where did you get your swimmers? I need them!

Shae October 26, 2012 at 1:34 pm

They are Sara swimmers from ezibuy :)

Cassandra J (@LittleOliverJ) October 26, 2012 at 10:31 am

Best summer body tip I’ve ever heard. My gym currently had a ‘get hot for summer’ sign out the front which I loath.
You are a gorgeous lady.

Kate - Crazy Crunchy Chocolate Mummy October 26, 2012 at 11:18 am

You are amazing! Everything about this post is fantastic!

Sam October 26, 2012 at 9:03 pm

I read this post a few hours ago and have had a wonderful afternoon since, travelling around the blogosphere reading about women deciding to accept and love their bodies. Was so inspired I had to get a blog myself and post my own.

You’re all kinds of awesome. Love your spunk.

Lee October 26, 2012 at 10:38 pm

Your body is awesome and beautiful and sexy. You are so right about skinny model-like bodies not owning the rights to sexy. We all own our own rights. You rock. xx

Jo October 27, 2012 at 9:17 pm

You and your body rock! Awesome!

Christine October 28, 2012 at 12:56 am

My partner’s family are all big boned and tall. This is great if you’re a guy, but not so great if your a girl ie, my partner’s niece. She’s 8, and already knows/ believes she’s fat. I can tell her whatever I like till I’m blue in the face, but I’m just one person in her world, which seems to constantly reaffirm to her that’s she’s too big- her own mother, girls at school, clothing, everything.

Even my own partner struggles with what the scales tell him. Currently, they’re at 120kg, and he’s unhappy with that, he hates how he looks…. yet when he lies on his side, his belly doesn’t slump and he can run around and keep up with his 6 year old nephew very well. Like his neice, and his brothers and father, he is broad shouldered and broad hipped.

So :(

Vanessa @ babblingbandit.me October 28, 2012 at 8:13 am

I heart this bit:

I deserve to feel sexy. I deserve to stop entwining my weight with my worth. I deserve to love the body I have right now instead of waiting for the perfect weight to like it.

I’m going to print it out and put it on my wall about my laptop as a reminder. I might even get it printed on a t-shirt.

Thanks. Great post. So inspired.

Reservoir Dad October 28, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Lisa Wood October 29, 2012 at 9:02 pm
