Seasons chart

by Shae on April 27, 2012

Tannah and Willow have been noticing the changes in the weather. I have to admit that I love how the difference in seasons is so obvious here in Melbourne. The leaves are changing colour and falling off the trees while the temperature is dropping. There have been a few questions as to when it will be summer again and how long until it’s really really cold here.

I sat down the other day with a big piece of butcher’s paper and drew a circle with a border and divided it into 4. I wrote the names of the seasons and the corresponding months on it. The big girls were interested and came to see what was going on. I showed them and explained and asked if they wanted to help me. They agreed.

First I asked them to choose colours for each season so they would know which was which without needing to be able to read the words. They chose green for spring, blue for winter, orange for autumn and yellow for summer. I asked them to draw some pictures around the outside of what they thought should go with each season.

 The girls drew-

Winter-trees with no leaves and blue snowflakes

Spring-lots of flowers and blue sky

Summer-the beach

Autumn-trees in various states of shedding their leaves and some loose leaves

And we got the final product!

Complete with everyone’s birthday written in the appropriate season so the kiddos can see when to expect presents!

Now I have been referring to the chart when they want so see how long until it’s warm again. There has been groaning when I show them how long from April to November. It’s going to be a loooong winter……
